Hits: 198
Animals have played a central role in legends and folklore for centuries, shaping the way we perceive them.
At the Odysseus Theme Park in Sami, Kefalonia, visitors can learn more about their real significance in nature. Let’s explore a few more common misconceptions!
🦌 Deer – The Sacred Animal of Artemis
📜 Myth: Deer are fragile and weak animals, easily frightened and without means of self-defense.
✅ Truth: While deer are known for their speed and agility, they are not defenseless. They can become very aggressive if they or a member of their herd feel threatened, using their powerful legs and antlers for self-defense. Additionally, deer have an excellent memory and can remember safe locations and food sources for years. Their antlers regenerate every year, making them unique in the animal kingdom!
In Greek mythology, deer were linked to Artemis, the goddess of hunting and nature. One of Heracles’ twelve labors was to capture the Ceryneian Hind, a magical creature with golden antlers that could run faster than an arrow.
🦚 Peacock – A Symbol of Immortality or Bad Luck?
📜 Myth: Peacocks are vain and ungrateful birds that do not recognize their owners and only care about their dazzling appearance.
✅ Truth: Peacocks have excellent memory and can recognize people who take care of them. Moreover, their spectacular tail isn’t just for beauty—it plays a crucial role in survival. The "eyes" on their feathers scare off predators, making them believe they are being watched by a larger creature.
The peacock was the sacred bird of Hera, the wife of Zeus. According to myth, the "eyes" on its tail come from Argus, the hundred-eyed giant whom the goddess placed in the sky as a constellation after his death. In some cultures, however, peacocks were seen as omens of bad luck.
🐕 Dog – Man’s Most Loyal Companion
📜 Myth: Dogs see only in black and white, do not understand human emotions, and are loyal only because we feed them.
✅ Truth: Dogs can see colors (although not as vividly as humans), and they are among the few animals that can recognize and respond to human emotions. Their loyalty isn’t just about food—numerous studies show that dogs form deep emotional bonds with people and can feel love, sadness, and even jealousy!
One of the most touching myths in The Odyssey is the story of Argos, Odysseus’ dog. Argos waited 20 years for his master to return and was the only one to recognize him upon his arrival in Ithaca. After that moment, the faithful dog closed his eyes forever.
🐗 Wild Boar – Dangerous Beast or Misunderstood Animal?
📜 Myth: Wild boars are aggressive, savage creatures that attack people and animals for no reason.
✅ Truth: While wild boars are strong and territorial, they do not attack unless they feel threatened. If left alone, they prefer to retreat rather than fight. Additionally, they are highly intelligent and social animals that live in organized groups and adapt well to different environments.
In The Odyssey, Odysseus was marked by a wound inflicted by a wild boar in his youth. Since then, wild boars have been seen as dangerous and fearsome creatures.
