Odysseus Theme Park

English
1. ATHENA-ODYSSEUS

Athena is the goddess of wisdom and strategy. She protected and advised Odysseus by the beginning of the Trojan War and during his journey back to home. When Odysseus arrived at Ithaca, Athena appeared in front of him. She disguised Odysseus as an old beggar and she gave him instructions on how to defeat the suitors, take back his kingdom and his wife.

2. ODYSSEUS AND PENELOPE’S PALACE

Penelope was loyal to her husband, believing that he was still alive, for 20 years. However, after a few years the suitors pushed her a lot, so she agreed to marry one of them after finishing weaving her wedding dress. Penelope weaved her wedding dress during the day and unraveled it at night in order to gain some until Odysseus returned to set her free. After 20 years, Odysseus dressed as a beggar, arrived at the palace and saw 108 suitors dinning, getting drunk and wasting his fortune. Using the help given by his son Telemachus and his loyal shepherd Eumaeus, he managed to vanish them, redeeming and getting back his wife, Penelope and his kingdom.

3. TROJAN HORSE

The Trojan horse was used as a hiding place for the Greek warriors and was an idea Odysseus came up with, in order to conquer Troy after a 10 year siege. They placed the Trojan horse outside the Troy’s walls and left. The Trojans thought that it was a gift from the Greeks for the end of the war, so the same night they got it inside the walls, celebrating. At the rack of the dawn, Odysseus and the other warriors got out of the wooden horse’s belly and opened the gates of Troy for the Greeks who had returned with their ships to get in. As a result, they conquered Troy.

4. WITCH CIRCE AND THE LITTLE PIGS

Odysseus arrived in the island of witch Circe, who was very beautiful and had a wonderful palace. Odysseus sent Eurylochus with some of his fellows to explore the island, while he stayed with the rest of them, back on the ship. Circe, using her charming song, attracted the witched fellows inside the palace and with her magic wand turned them into pigs. Eurylochus saw that and warned Odysseus. Odysseus met Circe inside the palace and after resisting her spells using god Hermes’s help, demanded to turn his fellows back to people.

5. SCYLLA AND CHARYBDIS
Circe advised Odysseus on how to manage to get through a very narrow passage between sharp rocks, where two terrifying monsters were couching. One of them was Charybdis, which swallowed the sea water and blenched it out, three times a day. The other was Scylla, a monster with six heads that caught sailors. Odysseus leaded the ship towards Scylla and oared strongly to avoid the whirlpools of Charybdis. That way, he only lost six of his fellows, who were caught by Scylla.
6. EUMAEUS’S HUT
When Odysseis arrived in Ithaca, he followed goddess Athens’s advice and dressed as a beggar, he went to the hut where his devoted shepherd, Eumaeus lived. His loyal dog, Argos was also there and recognized him immediately. Eumaeus recounted all the things that happened in the palace between Penelope and the suitors. In the same hut, he encountered his beloved son, Telemachus who hadn’t seen for 20 whole years.

7. CICONIANS
After their departure from Troy, Odysseus with his men stopped at the land of Ciconians, who were very skilled warriors. They found there wine and animals and while Odysseus asked his men to go back to the ships and leave, instead they kept drinking and butchering the animals. When Ciconians saw Odysseus’ men killing their animals a fierce battle began among them. As a result many of Odysseus’ men were killed and Odysseus forced to flee in their ships with the rest of his men.

8. CALYPSO'S LAND
Odysseus arrived strained in the island Ogygia, where the beautiful goddess Calypso, who loved him with all her heart lived. Odysseus craved to get back home so goddess Athena who protected him, begged Zeus to send Hermes to Calypso, to ask her fo help him return to his homeland. Calypso despite her sadness for parting from her beloved one, offered Odysseus wood to build a boat and sald goodbye to him. After a few days of travelling, Poseidon, angry for the harm Odysseus caused his son Cyclops, began a great sea storm. Odysseus boat crumbled and he beached off the island of Phaealans, which was ruled by Alcinous and his beautiful daughter, Nausicaa.

9. LOTUS-EATERS
The wind drove Odysseus' ship to the land of Lotus-eaters which was a peaceful race. Odysseus sent three of his men to explore the place.
Then they met the lotus eaters, who offered them some lotus to eat.
Lotus was a magical fruit that when people eat it they forget their families and origins. As a result, the men who ate lotuses did not want to leave that place. So Odysseus forced them to go back to the ship in order to continue their journey.

10. LAESTRYGONIANS
Odysseus and his fellows arrived in the island of Laestrygonians and anchored their ships on the beach. Laestrygonians were enormous and wild humans who attacked Odysseus's ships, throwing huge rocks. Only Odysseus's ship managed to survive because it remained off shore.

11. POSEIDON
Poseidon is the god of the seas and earth. He was strong enough to cause storms and to calm down the sea. Odysseus blinded the Poseidon's son, Polyphemus. Then Polyphemus asked his father to prevent Odysseus from returning to his home alive. When Odysseus went to Hades to take the prophecy, prophet Teiresias told him about Poseidon's wrath. When Odysseus left Calypso's island on a raft, Poseidon rose winds and enormous waves, so Odysseus' raft shattered and he was left helpless.
12. ODYSSEUS AND THE SIRENS
Circe had warned Odysseus that during his voyage, he would encounter the island of the Sirens that were sea demons with a woman's head and a fish's body. The Sirens trapped the voyagers with their charming song and after making them forget their destination, they were devoured. Circe's advice was for the fellows to block their ears using beeswax, while Odysseus was lashed on the ship's mast, so that he could hear their song but resist to their charm.

13. CYCLOPS POLYPHEMUS
The Cyclops Polyphemus, son of the god Poseidon, was a gigantic creature with one eye on his forehead. He lived in the island of the Cyclops, with sheep and his goats. Odysseus and his fellows arrived hungry and strained in the island, got in his cave and started eating his cheese and animals. When Cyclops arrived at the cave, he asked Odysseus who he was and he answered "Nobody". As he was angry, he ate some of Odysseus's fellows and prisoned the rest of them in his cave. Odysseus got Cyclops drunk on wine and then got him blind with a fired pole, while he was sleeping. Then he ordered his fellows to strap themselves to the bellies of the sheep, so they managed to escape. When Odysseus sailed away, he shouted "Polyphemus, if anyone asks you who got you blind, answer Odysseus, Laertes's son from Ithaca."

Hellos Island was à beautiful verdant island where the cattle of Helios grazed. Circe had advised Odysseus not to hurt the cattle of god Helios, when they arrive in the island. Some of his fellows slaughtered some cows in order to eat. When Odysseus got aware of that, he ordered to leave the island as soon as possible. God Helios got really angry and asked Zeus to punish them. Zeus caused great sea storm, as well as strong winds and a heavy thunder sliced the ship in half.
